What holds Guayule back?

Guayule is supposed to be an incredible alternative to rubber, an alternative fuel, and the plant that cures much of what ails us. Why is it that Guayule never seems to pick up much traction as a commercial crop? Yes, there are attempts to grow it commercially in Arizona and it is constantly hyped as the crop of the future but it's always in the future. In that sense it reminds me of the flying cars we were promised when we were in elementary school.

This can break the cycle of threats and blackmail.
