Celebrating Christmas -- or not
Skye Jethani isn't as reactionary as some of us and has a good post on the Leadership blog regarding the megachurches which have canceled Sunday services on Christmas Day. There is historical precedent, as well as logistical reality.
On the other hand, Charlie Lehardy is seeing the symbolic side of things:
I have to admit that I'm shocked by the decision to close churches on Christmas. It seems to me that we Christians are always lamenting the lack of "Christ in Christmas," so surely cancelling church services is like throwing up your hands and handing the holiday to Santa and his mega-corporation elves. Bad decision. Terrible message. Dreadful symbolism.
ADDITION: The NY Times has a more than decent article on this issue, too. One of the things which makes this story so interesting is that it is receiving so much attention in the secular press. Society on a whole is recognizing that this is symbolic of a cultural shift that has taken place -- for better or worse.
