ILLINOIS church gives away $1,000 each week in door prize money. That's one way to build attendance -- although I'm not sure it builds the church. I wonder how many winners just drop their prizes back into the offering. ~ link (via)

• THIS is the second blog post today expressing annoyance with the Canadian health care system. I only mention it because there are some vocal people in the States who want us to model our new system on their system. ~ link

I don't think Jordon's post reflects the Canadian health care system as a whole. Private clinics have started started in the last decade or so and the debate carries on about whether we should allow private clinics or not.

As it is, the health care system is *technically* all public. Private clinics are an anomaly, as is this pro-athlete situation.

But then I don't pay much attention to these things. Which says something about our health care system, I suppose.

@ Leonard Sweet:

Yes. Its Christian name is "nominalism" and if we don't start thinking about hives soon there won't be anywhere to find honey.

I think the Canadian system is quite good. My son just went through a horrible time with seizures and I only had to pay for parking. My sister spent years in hospital, my mom had cancer, and Wendy almost died having Oliver and we never saw a bill and got excellent world class care (as long as you are in a major city) for them. At the same time, it isn't perfect. It's slow, it's inefficient, and it seems more about controlling cost than treating patients well if it isn't a crisis.

I think those are fair analyses of what I've seen -- consistent with what my relatives who work in the system say. However, there are some people here in the States who have romanticized the Canadian system -- to such a degree that most Canadians would roll their eyes. To hear them talk you'd think Canada was the kingdom of God (although as secularists they would use such terminology). :-)
