Thursday Notes

The good folks at the ESV Bible site have developed a Bible lands overlay for the new Google map technology. Very creative.

In case you're still functioning with 25-year-old stereotypes, "15-year-old girls are now the world's top consumers of computer chips." Link
---
The Costco formula -- high end merchandise at low cost, good wages and benefits. And I'd add to an otherwise great story, the polish dogs with kraut that I buy a couple of times a week after cruising for samples.

Heat relief! In addition that to the fact that the highs dropped down into the mid-90's we spent a portion of today in the SF Bay Area (90 miles away -- doing the UC Berkeley tour and shopping at IKEA) where we had to wear an additional light layer because of the coastal cool. We've also got a fantastic delta breeze tonight that has dropped the Turlock temps into the 70's. Wow!

On the way back from Berkeley there was a single-wide mobile home fire in the middle of an almond orchard, about a mile east of I-5 at the Westley exit. I think every firefighter on the westside was there. It looked like 10 engines and tankers -- including one or two from CDF. No one wants to take chances when everything is so dry. On top of that, no one, especially the volunteers, wants to miss out on an opportunity to put all of that training to work.

Regarding Joel Osteen and the Lakewood Church in Texas, the first church in the US to average more than 30k worshippers a week, Metafilter is trying to figure out "this new capitalist mutatation in Christianity"

On the other end of the spectrum, Richard Kew feels that he needs to write an apology for why he is remaining an Anglican -- part 1, part 2

Actually he has anguished much over the Episcopal Church fiascoes and I think he's trying to convince himself.
