FOR THE FIRST TIME in 40 years National Geographic is publishing an issue without a photo on the front cover. The issue will center around the growth and renewal on the continent of Africa. LinkRelated -- conservationists J. Michael Fay thinks that all the famine relief efforts in Africa are misguided. "People aren't connecting the dots," he said of African relief efforts. "We gotta stop talking about poverty alleviation, and we gotta start talking about sustainable development."
This isn't an original idea. We've known that for a long time and I'd venture to say that there are more people working in that direction than in relief. The problems, though, are political. Whenever a new war breaks out all the progress seems to unravel. Those Africans with power are going to have to rethink its function and how they guard it. This is difficult where certain kinds of entitlements are seen as the goal of power and where graft is accepted as normative.

I DROVE OVER to Mission Springs in the Santa Cruz area yesterday afternoon so that I could attend a meeting -- and so that I could use my sweatshirt. In a few hours I'll be back in the heat frying in Turlock. One reason that California is so amazing is because it has so many micro-climates.
GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER is going to skip the grand opening of UC Merced. He's already less than popular with the educators in the state, so I'm sure this won't help matters. Oh well, I suppose you can't accuse him of being overly concerned with scoring political points. Link
