Monday Notes

NEARLY HALF of Asia's 1.27 billion (not million -- but billion) children live in poverty -- "deprived of food, safe drinking water, health or shelter, a development agency said in a report released Monday." If this is accurate this makes the problems in sub-Saharan Africa look miniscule. Link

OXFORD UNIVERSITY will no longer accept child prodigies because they can't provide a child safe environment -- as required by a new child protection law. Link

TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY of Betsy's last year of high school. She's ready. (The 2005-2006 Turlock Unified School District multi-color calendar in .pdf format is available here.)

I'm taking Kirk back to San Diego on Friday. He has three weeks of training as a resident advisor; then he starts his final year at UCSD on September 19th.

Kent's classes at UC Irvine also start on September 19th -- but he'll be hanging out here in Turlock a little longer than Kirk.

$1.2 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY -- The Modesto Bee has an article this morning about Carl Kelm, who was offered $1.2 million in college scholarship money. He and his mother spent Thursday evenings researching and applying for scholarships -- starting his freshman year. It looks like he has accepted a full-ride from Stanford.

TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS in AC costs and to keep employees happy, many companies are allowing shorts and flip-flops during the summer months. This is contrary to an over-all trend back toward more formal business attire. Link

WE HAVE ADDED TWO MORE SONGS to Cheryl's website. These were both written this year -- Shalom and Crucified, Glorified. Each is available as sheet music in .pdf format and as a midi sample. All free.

THIS MORNING GOOGLE RELEASED the Google Sidebar, which sits on the Windows desktop. I've got it loaded up and am playing with it today. My first impressions are pretty positive. It squares off the screen and acts as a mini-web-browser loaded with tools -- some of which learn the user's habits and provide information it thinks helpful. No ads. Since it is integrated with the Google Desktop Search it needs to be resident on the machine for some time as it indexes the content of the machine before it is fully functional.

SALT LAKE CITY MAYOR Rocky Anderson is organizing demonstrators to protest President Bush's appearance in the city today. There goes another stereotype.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH in Jerusalem has named a new patriarch to replace Irineos I, who got the boot over some questionable land dealings. His successor is Metropolitan Theophilos -- a Greek national. Are there no capable Palestinians to oversee their church? Probably. It's just that the Greeks have a monopoly on the Eastern Orthodox church structure there -- much to the consternation of the locals. Politics are unavoidable but there is way too much of it going on there. Another stereotype is perpetuated.
