Sunday Notes

BRENT LAYTHAM'S article Suffer the Children? echoes my own thinking on why we are so intent on including children in our worship as much as possible. We could shuffle them off to a program designed around their own unique needs -- but that is not the best overall strategy for Christian formation. Link (.pdf)

A NORTHWEST AIRLINES PLANE blew four tires while landing in Detroit yesterday. This is big news because the NWA mechanics are on strike. However, I haven't seen any reports in the mainland US media about the NWA flight that had a rough landing in Guam on Friday (before the strike began). The landing gear collapsed and the passengers were all evacuated down the shoots. Three people received minor injuries.

MSN HAS A FUNKY video promoting their Virtual Earth feature. Unfortunately, the feature itself is a dud compared to what Goggle is offering with their map system and Google earth. But the video is cute.

OUTDOOR BIBLE -- In the unending quest for coolness the Bible-makers are releasing an outdoor version of the NASB New Testament. It looks like a series of folded maps, made from plastic -- "Packaged in a Sweet Burlap Bag" -- $35.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I certainly appreciate the creativity and can see how it would be useful for backpackers or on whitewater rafting trips (or in the shower). But the NASB is known more as a solid scholar's translation which you'd spread out next to your commentaries and Greek NT. It's not exactly the most readable translation for a popular audience. If this were a NLT product I think it might fly.

ALPINE CONFERENCE CENTER, a SoCal Christian camping and conference ministry owned by our conference of churches, has had enough of the drought! They've installed artificial turf on their athletic field -- perhaps the first church camp in the country to do so. Link

GAS PRICES -- Here is what they are paying for gas around the world. Why does Venezuela suddenly look so attractive? I remember that we occasionally paid 24 cents a gallon when I was a kid but never 12 cents!

MI CASA, SU CAJA
-- More unique and creative housing built from shipping containers. And then there are micro compact homes which look like they've been made from shipping containers.

DESPITE THE HYPE, RSS (Real Simple Syndication) has not really taken off. Link

I've played with it a bit but have pretty much decided that I enjoy the experience of visiting people's blogs and webpages more than having a list of their stories. If blogging were only about transmitting raw information I might take RSS more seriously.

THE PRICE OF ORANGE JUICE will go up in the US, say the Brazilian citrus growers who are concerned with new tariffs on orange juice concentrate designed to protect Florida growers. Brazil is the largest producer of oranges in the world. Link

Orange juice trivia - I had friends who drove trucks of orange juice from Florida to California in order to mix it with California OJ for better color.

Generalization: California oranges have better color but Florida oranges, because of the protracted heat and humidity, are slightly sweeter. So they mix things up a bit to get the combination that they think consumers will like best.

Now that's something to be bothered about! Nevermind the gas prices, what about the cost of a gallon of OJ?! ;-D
