Tuesday Notes

LITTLE BUDDY GONE
Bob Denver -- aka "Gilligan," one of the great icons of 1960's television has died. (The Skipper on Gilligan's Island used to refer to him as "Little Buddy.") Link

GO BOBCATS
UC Merced opened yesterday. Kent and I took ourselves on a tour today. There may only be 1,000 students but it's got the buzz and energy of a university. What an exciting place to be right now.

RAELIAN EXPOSÉ
Two amateur documentary makers say they've infiltrated the UFO cloning sect.

GRACE GRINDERS
Scot's post on "grace grinders" has apparently struck a raw nerve among some of our Reformed brethren. Yup. You just take one look at Scot and you think -- "Wow, that guy is so totally antinomian!"

DELIGHTFUL EVACUEE STORY
NPR's Morning Edition had a great little story yesterday about storm survivors and how one rural Louisiana town and their priest have been caring for them.

RIPPLE EFFECTS
Baton Rouge, which had a population of 228,000, swelled by 200,000 evacuees, instantly surpassing New Orleans as Louisiana's largest city. Hotels are bursting. Roads are clogged with traffic. Local service stations are suffering gas shortages and long lines. On busy Florida Boulevard, Wendy's and Church's Chicken stores were warning patrons that there were no more french fries...

Some resilient, middle-class evacuees are already putting down new roots elsewhere. In Baton Rouge and Jackson, Miss., so many of them are buying houses that Sen. David Vitter, R-La., calls it "the great land rush." The average home price in Baton Rouge has jumped about $25,000, to $200,000, since Katrina, real estate agent Beth Alford says. One New Orleans law firm bought 50 houses in Baton Rouge, sight unseen, says Ann Prewitt, a Madison, Miss., agent. Link

Brad,
What a picture, with the word "Fall" behind me -- the only thing readable.

It took me hours and hours of sorting through Google picture hits to find something appropriate. And, yes, I thought "fall" made it especially appropriate. :-)
