Sunday Roundup

BEACH TIME
Cheryl and I spent part of yesterday afternoon on a beautiful white sand beach -- snorkeling and watching the waves break on the barrier reef (about 100 yards out). The water is aqua green and a constant 82 degrees.

THIS MORNING...
I was the guest preacher at the Lutheran Church of Guam, which sits on the beach looking out over the Philippine Sea. And it's not just a great location -- wonderful group of people, too -- friendly and they can sing.

THE END OF THE LIGHT BULB AS WE KNOW IT
A grad student at Vanderbilt University has accidentally discovered an alternative to light bulbs that is longer-lasting, cheaper, and more flexible than Thomas Edison's invention. The Department of Energy is estimating that LED lighting could reduce US energy consumption for lighting by 29%.

HURRICANE HEROES
As the US is bracing for yet another hurricane hit, it is worth noting that while there were multiple layers of governmental failure when Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, the Southern Baptists and other religious groups were shining.

THE AVERAGE COLLEGE STUDENT...
in American is a woman.

COMPUTER CASES...
made of cardboard?

COOL AT LAST
The A/C ("air con" -- as they say here in Guam) had been out for two days at Dave and Joyce Owen's house, where we're staying. They had 15 students over Friday night and unfortunately it was a tad bit warm -- but not unbearable. But the repair guys got it straightened out yesterday afternoon and now the house is full of cool comfortable air.
