If AT&T's offer to buy BellSouth Corp for $67 billion goes through, four of the original seven baby bells created when the court broke up the AT&T monopoly would be reunited. The difference this time is that there ARE now alternatives. And we can all own our telephone equipment. Do you remember that -- when THE phone company owned all of the telephone sets in the house and leased them to us? And they charged us for the number of phones we plugged into the wall. Now many of us don't even use landline systems!
