~ While in Chuuk last weekend I finished a book that I'm hoping to write about -- if I can ever get out of crisis mode. And then I started into Scot McKnight's A Community Called Atonement. Baker (see above) is reacting against the abuses and extremes of the penal substitutionary atonement metaphor. McKnight's argument seems to be slightly different in nature. He is suggesting that it is in our interaction with all the biblical metaphors that the work of atonement breaks into our lives. It isn't so much what they represent but in what they do to us. I have a lot more to read. But so far it's perhaps the most stimulating book on the topic that I've read.

Brad, I'm most of the way through McKnight's book. It is outstanding. I think what I like most about it is its richness...it's 'full-bodied,' so to speak. He does a great job of touching on the fullness of what Christ has done for us and then through us.
Yeah but it got worse again today.
