The governor has been talking sweet to the CMNI folks up north -- perhaps a part of his plan to bring Guam and the Northern Marianas together to form a more powerful union -- maybe even a 51st state?
Historically there has been tension between Guam and the neighboring islands in the north . During WWII the people on the northern islands collaborated with the Japanese while their cousins (literally) on Guam were harshly treated in the the Japanese concentration camps.
The CNMI has about 80,000 people spread over 15 islands, compared to Guam's 170,000. Both are US territories and both were historically Chamorro in culture -- although the largest population group in each territory is now Filipino. (Chamorros still retain the power in each territory.)
This is actually a good time to talk peace. The economy in the CNMI has been sucking air lately but things have been picking up on Guam. It might be that some of the progress on Guam could spill over to the CNMI -- perhaps even generating a synergy that could be beneficial to everyone.
Even if not, reconciliation is always a good goal. Blessed are the peacemakers!
