• Researchers at Purdue University have discovered a way to make LED lighting (light-emitting diodes) cost effective. LEDs are about four times more efficient than the old incandescent lights and more environmentally friendly than the compact fluorescent bulbs. The researchers developed a technique to create LEDs on low-cost, metal-coated silicon wafers. Overall, this discovery could potentially reduce global electrical consumption by 10%. ~ Link

• The NY Times has an article on Berea College -- "...founded 150 years ago to educate freed slaves and 'poor white mountaineers,' accepts only applicants from low-income families, and it charges no tuition." ~ Link to NY Times article | Link to Berea College
• The Guam Liberation Day parade was still going strong when we left after three-and-a-half hours of floats, bands, and carabaos. I have never been to a parade where they gave away more candy, tea, Pepsi, pencils, Frisbees, ice cream, bottled milk, umbrella hats, t-shirts... Perhaps that's why it moved so slowly -- lots of interaction with the crowd. Lots and lots of fun.
We'll be back down there tonight for the fireworks.
• Unfortunately, a B-52 which was supposed to fly over the parade has apparently crashed out at sea. Rescue efforts are underway. ~ Link
