Simple and functional bike trailer

I'm trying to figure something out what would allow me to leave the Xtracycle Hoddie panniers on my longtail rack and still attach a trailer to Root Beer (my cargo bike) for the larger items that I occasionally want to haul. I could attach behind/under the seat but then the trailer would rub on the rack. I can't attach at the rear of the rack because the Hoodie covers it and I don't want to damage the panniers. Suggestions?
