Thursday Roundup

PASTOR APPRECIATION
October was pastor appreciation month and the people of Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Turlock told their pastor to go jump out of a plane. Of course, they also gave Michael Mechsner a parachute -- or at least the use of one. They gave him a tandem jump at one of the local skydiving operations.

In case anyone in my own congregation is wondering, I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to jump out of an airplane -- with or without a parachute. Michael is actually a veteran at this kind of thing and he loves it.

PASTOR NON-APPRECIATION
The former pastor of the small First Congregational Church, up the road in Ripon, is not nearly as popular this week. Apparently he sold the church's building six months ago and never bothered to tell the congregation. (In a congregational church ministers have no such authority -- the property is owned by the congregation). He was arrested last week. The transaction was through a legitimate broker and a title company.

Did he really think that he was going to get away with a stunt like that? There are definitely parts of the story missing.

GOOGLE'S VIRTUAL LIBRARY
Now open for business -- mostly containing samples at this point . However, there are plenty of public domain books available in their entirety. Should be fun for people who want to read 19th century novels or check old references.

$1 DOMAIN REGISTRATION
That is, if you're in the "developing world."

Public Interest Registry (PIR), the US-based administrator of the Internet's .org domain, is offering Web addresses in parts of the developing world for just $1 per year... Since launching the offer in July, PIR has seen a 25 percent increase in .org registrations in India alone. The $1 addresses may soon be made available to other developing countries, meaning the Web is about to get a little more worldwide. Link

WALK THIS WAY CELEBRATION
The community-wide Walk This Way Thanksgiving celebration will be held at 6 p.m., Sunday, November 20th, at Monte Vista Chapel. We had tried to secure a larger venue at the university but were unsuccessful. So, we'll all squeeze in nice and cozy like at Monte Vista. I think they'll seat 1,100 or so.
