Good to Great -- for non-profits
Jim Collins has self-published a 42-page booklet called Good to Great and the Social Sectors -- a monograph to accompany his Good to Great bestseller. This is noteworthy on two levels.
First, it recognizes that not all socially significant institutions are driven by the bottom-line. One of the more common messages in contemporary society is that if you're not revenue producing then you're not all that important in the over-all scheme of things.
Second, here is a best-selling author who could have contracted with any major publisher to produce this booklet, but he chose to self-publish -- doing an end-run around the old school publishing industry -- and realizing it or not, raising the status of every other self-published piece out there. Expect to see more and more of this kind of thing.
BTW, Good to Great and the Social Sectors is currently #80 on the book sales list at Amazon.com.
