UN PANEL: "CLOSE GITMO"
A UN Human Rights Commission report is calling for the immediate closure of the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the prosecution of officers and politicians "up to the highest level" who are accused of torturing detainees.

Agreed. The whole Guantanamo approach is riddled with human rights issues. The Bush administration has led us down a path inconsistent with the American spirit of justice and due process. In as such we are actually feeding the anti-American frenzy that we are trying to control.

However, at this point in history it seems that the UN Human Rights Commission is as much of a political machine as the Bush administration. And the notion that force feeding hunger striking prisoners amounts to torture puts the whole report in question.

We need to do the right thing -- but not because of some goofy UN report.
