Happy New Year!

~ 2008 came in with a bang in Carins -- two fireworks shows -- one at 9 p.m. for us children and the other at midnight for the pen-geriatrics, who can still stay up that long. I heard that the midnight show wasn't as good as the 9 p.m. show anyway.

~ The fruit bats were less than entertained by the fireworks. The noise must have been hard on their ears for they became more and more agitated as the fireworks got louder and louder.

~ After fireworks we went back to our hotel and watched the remixed Beatles movie HELP! I still don't get the movie -- except for the parts that mimicked the 3 Stooges -- which seemed to be most of the show.

~ Cairns is a clean city -- hardly any trash anywhere. Even though they have a similar climate to Guam there is hardly any mold or mildew on the buildings. The architecture is fun and funky resort -- slightly refined 1960's.

~ Lots of backpackers here -- lots of Germans -- not too many Americans. Too bad this place is so far away from the US -- Americans would feel very welcome here and would enjoy all that this place has to offer.

~ From what I've seen on television the Australian public is quite concerned about how they are perceived by the rest of the world. The US, of course, could care less about what the rest of the world thinks of them -- for better and worse.
