(Wednesday) Terry Mattingly has picked up on the fact that Grand Canyon University, a Southern Baptist school in Phoenix, plans to give Alice Cooper an honorary doctorate at commencement on Saturday.
When I first moved to Phoenix about 1,000 years ago, and I was trying to figure out where I was going to continue my college education, I drove out to Grand Canyon College (as it was called back then) to check it out. But after spending 10 minutes with the director of admissions, who spoke with a thick Southern accent and was wearing the ugliest green leisure suit I had ever seen, I decided to take my chances with the pagans at Arizona State University. The rest is history. But I do wonder what has transpired at the school over the last 30 years -- that the 10-years-out-of-date leisure suit mentality has given way to Alice Cooper.
By the way, the ceremony will be broadcast live via the Web at 2 p.m., Saturday (MST -- Arizona doesn't do daylight savings time so it's the same as PDT).
