HABEMUS PAPAM
Uwe Siemon-Netto called it right, German Cardinal Josef Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict XVI. Ecumenists and conservatives will both be excited. "Progressives" will not be nearly as happy. I find it interesting that the church has once again chosen an intellectual as pope. His age (he turned 78 on Saturday) is possibly his greatest limitation.

CT has put up a review of PapaRatzi's (as they've taken to calling the new pope on the evening news) 1998 book Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millenium. Great insights into how he thinks.
