Monday Notes

IS UC MERCED, which opens on September 5th, the world's greenest campus? Quite possibly. Link

CROCODILIA -- The alligator hunt in SoCal is in recess -- but the Chinese are actively looking for 13 escaped crocs. Somebody better get hold of Steve Irwin.

A PRINCIPLED LEADER -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a vocal opponent of capital punishment, says that he will not sign Saddam Hussein's death warrant. Link

GOOGLENET -- More evidence suggesting that Google is attempting to set-up a free wireless network. Link

NPR STORY about Yoido Full Gospel Church, in South Korea, which has 800,000 members. Link

THE BRUNT OF KATRINA appears to be hitting just east of New Orleans -- but still doing major damage to the city. Apparently the winds have peeled away part of the roof of the Superdome, where thousands of people are waiting out the storm. They appear to be safe. Link

WWL News no longer seems to be broadcasting on the Internet. It's hard to tell if the station is down or if their server is swamped with people like myself anxious to hear from those in the middle of the storm.

While close to it, this was not the doomsday storm that New Orleans has been drilling for. However, the storm has affected drilling in the Gulf so we can expect high prices at the pump by the end of the week.

REGENT UNIVERSITY will launch a Master of Arts in Strategic Foresight degree in 2006. My friend Dan Pietrzyk, who is finishing up his Doctor of Strategic Leadership at Regent, assures me that in spite of the fact that the university was founded by Pat Robertson it doesn't currently embody his values or reflect his influence.

TRANSCULTURAL CHURCH -- The News Leader in Staunton, Virginia has a good popular audience article that deals with the complexities of racial reconciliation and being a multi-cultural church.

JUMP FOR JAVA! -- "Coffee not only helps clear the mind and perk up the energy, it also provides more healthful antioxidants than any other food or beverage in the American diet, according to a study released Sunday." Link

I know this has been somewhat of a concern in the past, but will this bring google closer to being our new big brother - at least to those who use googlenet?

Would this effectively force other companies to offer free wireless, or will other companies say, if you pay us, we won't blitz you with ads or keep track of your movements.

When will it come to chicago?
