250 MPG HYBRID -- it's possible now.

A WOMAN TRYING to exit a dangerous domestic situation called the church and asked me to help her with a motel room. After considerable discussion I decided that in this situation the best thing to do was to simply help her with the room rather than try to channel her through an agency first. So I went to the motel and paid for her room.

Two hours later she called back to the church. And I thought, now that she's found a sympathetic ear she'll be asking for something else -- as often is the pattern. But that wasn't it at all. She just wanted to say thank you to the church. In all my years of dealing with strangers in need, no one has ever called back just to say thank you. There are faint echoes here of the story in Luke 17:11-17.

LAST NIGHT Cheryl and I made our reservations for our trip to Guam in October. We used kayak.com and found round trip tickets for less than $620 each (including taxes, fees, etc.)! We'll have a short layover in Tokyo. Flying one direction it is about 15 hours flight time and the other direction only about 13 hours. Once we get there we'll be hanging out and helping out at the Pacific Islands Bible College. We're pretty excited about the whole thing.

GOOGLE HAS PUT its digital library project on hold because of concerns from copyright holders and publishers. Link

THIS WOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED 30 years ago -- a new Russian Orthodox chapel in the Belarussky railway terminal. I'd say that it's cute but that might offend someone. What a strategic idea! (via Orthodixie)

$3 MILLION! That's what a Needles, California woman won from a penny slot machine in Laughlin, Nevada. I suppose she can now afford to hire someone to help her roll all of those pennies.
