Saturday Notes

SUMMER IS OVER
I had to put on a sweatshirt this morning.

HOW TO
From LifeHacker.com: (1) set your home computer up as a webserver & (2) assign a domain name to your server. This isn't exactly one of those lifeskills everyone needs to know. Nor is it the most efficient way to get and stay connected to the Web. But if you're geeky enough the challenge of it makes it worth it. My friend Eric Bangeman, who writes for Ars Technica (among other things), was using an old Mac in an upstairs bedroom as an online server the last time I visited him.

ORGANIZED RELIGION
The churches are getting high marks for their quick and comprehensive mobilization to care for victims of the Katrina disaster. Link

PATIENTLY WAITING
The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church temple was destroyed when the planes hit the adjoining World Trade Center on 9-11. Four years later they are still waiting for the government to sort through the redtape so they can rebuild. Link

And this is a small project compared to New Orleans.

GOOGLE ACQUISITION?
Is Google trying to acquire Reuters? Link

FIREFOX BETA
There is a beta version of the new Firefox browser available. I ran it briefly but went back to the old version because the Google toolbar and several plug-ins that I use regularly are not yet available for the new browser. Link

MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES
Gmail users can now use multiple "from" addresses with their gmail account. Link

FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE
WolframTones is an online music generator. It works by taking simple programs from Wolfram's computational universe, and using music theory and Mathematica algorithms to render them as music. Each program in effect defines a virtual world, with its own special story--and WolframTones captures it as a musical composition. Link

This is actually quite fun, regardless of what one thinks of Wolfram. You can even download the compositions as ringtones for cell phones.

TEEN CHALLENGE
Cheryl and I were guests at the San Joaquin Valley Teen Challenge banquet last night. God is uniquely using them to help recover some very lost people.

The hub of the operation in Turlock is Dennis Whitman and the board of trustees announced at the banquet that they are renaming the re-entry center in honor of his 25 years of service with Teen Challenge -- "The Dennis Whitman Re-entry Center." He was a bit embarrassed but he recovered well.

Teen Challenge, which works with young men (and their families), most of whom struggle with substance abuse issues, has two centers in our area -- Faith Home Teen Ranch and the Re-entry Center on Main Street in Turlock.

TEEN DEATH
Stephanie Abuan, a senior in Betsy's class at Pitman High School was killed in an auto crash after school on Thursday. One of the passengers also died and another is in critical condition. Link
