Sunday Notes

GOOD-BYE IRAQ
Our long-time friend Mike Gillett, a Covenant pastor and a National Guard chaplain, has completed a stint in Iraq and is somewhere enroute back to the US. Yeah!

NUKE THE TERRORISTS?
As frustrating and dangerous as the terrorist situation is, the addition of nuclear weapons into the struggle -- even the rhetoric -- only complicates and compounds the problem. IOW, it is a step in the wrong direction.

VOLCANIC BULGE IN OREGON
As Kevin pointed out in the comments section the other day, when Forbes magazine was listing so many Oregon cities as exceptionally safe from natural disaster, they might have been a bit premature. There is a large, slow-growing volcanic bulge in Eastern Oregon that could be the beginnings of a volcano.

BUILDING DEDICATION
After years of perseverance -- purchasing land, selling land, purchasing a building, watching it burn down, then purchasing more land -- Selah Covenant Church, where I was the pastor from 1984-1989, is dedicating their newly constructed building this morning. This great, nearly-100-years-old, congregation is located in Selah, Washington.

IKEA HOMES
Low cost home furnishings company IKEA is also in the low cost home building business through their associated firm BoKlok. They are just now entering the market in the UK. (.pdf)

RED CROSS APPEAL
The Red Cross says that it needs 40,000 more volunteers.

Traditionally Americans fatigue easily and tend to lose interest in crises and victims after the first few months or so. (It will be tough to multi-task -- fighting a war or two and dealing with even one major disaster.) This one is apparently going to require ramped-up effort over a long period of time. No quick fixes this time. The greatest challenge will be to hold public attention long enough to get the job done -- whatever that ends up involving.

VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY DEVASTATED
"It was worse than post-war Vietnam" -- Hurricane Katrina's impact on the Gulf Coast Vietnamese community. Link
