I would like to suggest that the issue isn't whether it is contemporary or classical. The issue is performance. There is some music written to be sung and there is some written to be performed. That's perhaps always been true. But with the rise of an entertainment culture the church has simply bought into the idea that all significant music has to do with performance -- that's what we mimic on Sunday mornings.
