"Good" Friday?
To answer the question, no one is really sure why it is called "Good" Friday. It could be that there is some etymological relationship between the words good and holy. And in some Christian traditions the Friday before Easter is still called "Holy Friday". It could be that it was originally called "God's Friday" and the articulation changed (as it did with the phrase "God be with ye" -- now said "good-bye").
Regardless of origins, we also call it "good" because it reveals the goodness of God in sacrificing his Son and it is good because of the great good that came from it. It is not a stand alone holy day -- we always commemorate Good Friday with a hopeful eye on Easter Sunday. So it is good -- even if it has a tragic element. TGIF.
