Guardian Angel Day?
We have Mother's Day, Administrative Assistant's Day, Grandparent's Day, National Potato Chip Day, and Guidepost magazine would like us to include Guardian Angel Day in the calendar. The Roman Catholic Church has had a minor holiday, the October 2nd feast of the Guardian Angels, for centuries. But this year Guidepost magazine is promoting and spinning it in a slightly different way. (I couldn't say if they've done this in the past.) Guideposts has always been into stories of generic faith, miracles, and angels.
Not that I'm questioning the existence or importance of angels -- nor that some have guard duty at times (see Daniel 6:22). But there aren't any angels in the Bible called "guardian angels" nor is there any indication, contrary to pop theology, that each person has been assigned a guardian angel.
I even wonder what angels think of having their own day in the calender. If anything the angels mentioned in the Bible seem to do their thing in the background -- shunning attention -- flying under the radar (so to speak).
The word "angel" means "messenger" and good messengers go to great lengths to make sure that the messenger doesn't overshadow the message or the message sender. I suppose an angel's day might be celebrated within that context -- a celebration of God's faithfulness in communicating and protecting. But so many of the popular angel stories end up going in a completely different direction.
BTW, October 2nd is also National Custodial Workers Day. Some of them are definitely angels -- at least in spirit.
